The statistical mechanics and thermodynamics of data assimilation

Frank Alexander, CCS-3

Abstract

This talk will be an overview of some recently developed variational and Monte Carlo methods for practical nonlinear optimal estimation/ data assimilation. These methods apply to strongly nonlinear, nonequilibrium systems, and their computational performance can be enhanced by the user's knowledge of the underlying system. Specific applications in shock physics, nonequilibrium radiation diffusion and contaminant transport will be presented.
