After a break of about 20 years, interest in proton tomography has recently rebounded. Various research groups worldwide are again conducting theoretical as well as experimental research. This article briefly summarizes the history of the use of protons to perform medical radiography and tomography and serves as an introdution to this special issue of Zeitschrift für Medizinische Physik, which describes the latest activities in the field.
