The results of a project to develop a proton computed tomographic (CT) scanning system are reviewed. A high-quality proton CT reconstruction is presented which verifies the substantial dose advantage protons possess over x rays in obtaining CT reconstructions of equivalent density resolution. Furthermore, the unusual aspects of CT reconstruction noise are discussed. Modifications to the Moliere theory of multiple Coulomb scattering are described.
Keywords: proton computed tomography, proton radiography, low-dose scanning
