INFORMATION SHEET The Fifteenth International Workshop on MAXIMUM ENTROPY AND BAYESIAN METHODS July 31 - August 4, 1995 sponsored by the Center for Nonlinear Studies and the Radiographic Diagnostics Program Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Santa Fe Institute The Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory is pleased to host the Fifteenth International Workshop on Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods, to be held July 31- August 4, 1995, organized by Kenneth Hanson (kmh@lanl.gov) and Richard Silver (rns@loke.lanl.gov), and coordinated by Barbara Rhodes and Rose Vigil (505) 667-1444, (maxent@cnls.lanl.gov). LOCATION Workshop sessions will be held at St. John's College, 1160 Camino Cruz Blanca, Santa Fe, New Mexico. St. John's College, founded in 1696 in Annapolis, Maryland, is a four-year, liberal arts college with no religious affiliation. Located on 250 acres in the Sangre de Cristo foothills overlooking Santa Fe, the second St. John's campus is a quiet oasis, forming an intimate academic community in a spectacular southwestern setting. Campus guests will join the active St. John's summer community of graduate students pursuing master's programs in liberal arts and in Eastern classics. Workshop participants are invited to attend weekly lectures, concerts, special social events and film showings. The college library, bookstore, coffee shop, athletic fields, tennis courts and mountain hiking trails are open to all college guests. Within walking distance of the college, visitors can explore many of the advantages of Santa Fe, including picturesque adobe neighborhoods, the Old Santa Fe Trail, four major museums, and Canyon Road art galleries. ABSTRACTS Organizers will select abstracts for oral and poster presentations following the submission deadline of April 14, 1995. Abstracts may be submitted in LaTeX or ASCII and should be limited to one page of about 400 words. Please include a curriculum vita or a short biographical sketch. You will be notified by May 15 whether your paper has been selected for presentation. CONTRIBUTED PAPERS Manuscripts of accepted papers will be due at the Workshop, in camera-ready form, on diskette, and one hard-copy, and they must be prepared in LaTeX using a style file that will be made available to authors upon request. The registration fee of $250 covers general meeting costs, the reception, 2 dinners, tour, refreshment breaks and proceedings. The fee MUST BE submitted with the registration form by the deadline of June 10 and may be paid by personal or Cashier's check or money order in U.S. dollars, payable to MaxEnt95 Workshop. There are no provisions for payment by credit card or purchase order. Workshop registration and lodging will be confirmed no later than July 10. SCHOLARSHIPS Limited financial support will be available to assist graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who wish to attend the workshop. Formal requests for support should be submitted along with registration materials. Funding decisions will be made by the organizers and official notifications will be sent following the registration deadline. FOOD SERVICES Participants will dine in the college dining hall. Room and Board rates at St. John's include breakfast and lunch each day. Nonresidents may purchase meals in the dining hall at nominal rates. Dinners may be purchased separately in the dining hall by both residents and nonresidents. A full-service coffee shop is also open on campus. The Workshop Registration Fee includes two dinners and one reception. We hope you will also find an opportunity to sample one or more of the over 200 restaurants in Santa Fe, ranging from delightful down-home cafes to renowned establishments featured regularly in national and international food and travel magazines. Our reputation is well-deserved! LODGING Workshop participants will be able to select from two options. Reservations will be made for you according to the information you provide on the enclosed Lodging Form. Please note: Lodging Forms MUST be received by the Registration deadline of June 10! Santa Fe is at the height of the tourist season at this time, and the workshop CANNOT GUARANTEE lodging once the deadline has passed! St. John's College offers double-occupancy rooms with shared bathroom facilities, which are comfortably furnished with beds, desks, bookshelves, telephones and built-in dressing units. Balconies, common rooms and landscaped courtyards provide additional meeting and living spaces. Laundry facilities are located on campus. A package rate for 6 nights (check -in on Sunday, July 30 and check-out on Saturday, August 5) with breakfast and lunch provided from Monday through Saturday, is $300. This fee must be paid in full by the Registration deadline of June 10. We are unable to pro-rate the lodging fee for less than the full week's attendance. St. John's will accommodate early arrivals on Saturday, July 29 ONLY on a space-available basis, at an extra charge of $45 (no meals) to be paid directly to the college at the time of arrival. The Hotel Santa Fe, 1501 Paseo de Peralta at Cerrillos Road, Santa Fe, New Mexico, (1-800-825-9876) is a lovely Southwestern style hotel within walking distance of downtown Santa Fe. The hotel has guaranteed a special meeting rate of $96.00 (plus taxes, single or double) per room per night from Sunday, July 30 through check-out on Friday, August 4. If you would like to extend your stay in Santa Fe, rates for additional nights are $129.00, single or double. Additional adults (after two) will be charged $10 per person, per night. Children 17 and under stay free when in the same room with parents. Check-in time is 4:00 p.m., check-out is 12:00 noon. Reservation requests will be confirmed and guaranteed only when accompanied by one night's room deposit by check, money order or by credit card. 48 hours notice prior to expected arrival is required for cancellation and refund of deposit. Parking at the hotel is complimentary to its guests. Please note: transportation to St. John's College from the Hotel will NOT be provided by the workshop. Taxi fare from Hotel Santa Fe to St. John's College is approximately $6.00 for the first person, $1.00 per each additional person. TRANSPORTATION Albuquerque International Airport is the major air terminal nearest to Santa Fe (approximately 60 miles). Most major airlines fly into Albuquerque. There is also a small airport in Santa Fe which is serviced by Mesa Airlines (10 seat planes) from both Albuquerque and Denver; for information call 1-800-637-2247. You can reach downtown Santa Fe from the Albuquerque airport using a bus service called Shuttlejack which runs approximately every two hours. The cost is $20 each way and reservations are required; call 1-800-452-2665 for reservations and schedules. Be sure to mention to Shuttlejack when you make your reservation that you will need to be dropped off at St. John's College or the Hotel Santa Fe. If you are calling from outside the U.S., please contact Barbara Rhodes to help you with this reservation. If you prefer to rent a car, all major rental car companies are available at the Albuquerque airport. Budget Rental Cars has a contract with the Laboratory which provides liability, collision and loss coverage on all official Laboratory rentals at NO COST to you. Travelers in the U.S. should DECLINE this coverage when offered, as the purchase of additional insurance cannot be reimbursed. If you would like to reserve a rental car under this contract as an official visitor to the Laboratory, please contact Barbara Rhodes. Maps to Santa Fe and St. John's College will be provided when your registration is confirmed. Santa Fe has limited city bus service. Summer schedules will be available at the Workshop. Taxi service is available 24 hours per day. WEATHER Santa Fe is located at an altitude of 7,000 feet. In summer, you can expect pleasant, warm, sunny days and cooler nights with the possibility of afternoon rain showers. August temperatures typically range from a low of 55 degrees to a high of 85 degrees Fahrenheit. SANTA FE OPERA Santa Fe Opera's 1995 season runs from June 30 - August 26th. Music lovers are enchanted by the musical quality and the spectacular outdoor theater overlooking a vast panorama. Reservations are a MUST for the popular performances (a limited number of "standing room" tickets are available only on the day of performance).
